Tour Description

Enjoy a memorable and educational day at one of the most important Mayan cities of the post-classic period.

The Mayan name "Chich'en Itza" means "At the mouth of the well of the Itza". The site contains many fine stone buildings in various states of preservation and many have been restored. The buildings of Chichén Itza are grouped in a serie of architectonic sets. The three best known of these complexes are the Great North Platform, which includes the monuments of El Castillo, Temple of Warriors and the Great Ball Court; The Ossario Group, which includes the pyramid of the same name as well as the Temple of Xtoloc; and the Central Group, which includes the Caracol, Las Monjas, and Akab Dzib. The Sacred Cenote is another highlight of the place.

Don't miss the opportunity to get a photo of one of the New 7 Wonders of the World, the Kukulkan Pyramid also known as "El Castillo" ("The Castle"). This four-side pyramid is crowned by a rectangular-shaped temple on the top. Each side counts with a staircase of 91 steps which multiplied by 4 sides of the pyramid gives us 364 steps. One more step leads to the top temple representing 365 days of the year. A fine example of the high knowledge that the Mayan culture had regarding astronomy and how they used to apply it into their architecture, is the light and shadow effect that takes place on the Spring and Autumn equinox. At the setting of the sun, the corner of the structure casts a shadow in the shape of a serpent. For the Mayan people it represented the descent of Kukulkan, their main god.
